Invitation by Nina Freeman - "Those Pink Lilies"

Top Award Winners
General Comments from Russell Yerkes:
This is an excellent show.  Almost every painting I have seen deserves an award.  And the eleven I have chosen all deserve a Best of Show Award.

Waiting by Lynn Ferris

Best of Show - $1,200
Florida League of Cities

Russell Yerkes review: ” this is a very powerful painting..  You know they are conversing, waiting for the bus.  This painting captures mood and feeling beautifully.  Is the lady leaning forward nervous?  What are their plans for the day?  The play of light and shadow is excellent.

One Way Out by Dean Michell

Gold Award - $1,000
Smile if you Love Art, Wakulla Bank and

John Olson Insurance

Russell Yerkes review: The neutral colors in the shadow with differing levels of darks work so well with this painting.  Then adding a spot of color in the bike and at the top left and the tilting pole brings home the feeling that you have been there, especially because of that old building in the background.

Black and White by Don Taylor

Silver Award - $780
Taws Past Presidents, Mary Apple and
Lucy Ho's Bristo

Russell Yerkes review: Don is using very strong lights and darks and complementary colors.  I like the texture in the shadows and the soft lines.  The values are just really strong with the color of the headdresses reflected in the nose of the white horse.

The Red Necklace by Marion Hylton

Bronze Award - $600
TaWS Signature Members, Marina Haldas,
John and Ann Davis, and Tonya Toole

Russell Yerkes review: The detail in this painting is amazing! It must have taken forever!  And I like the way she captured the light.  It is almost too well done. Is the person in the painting getting ready for the market?

Lumina II by Lynn Kroll

Award of Excellence - $500
Eye Associates of Tallahassee

Russell Yerkes review: That white spot brings your eye directly into the painting and leads you in and then around the painting.  I like the symbols and the amount of abstract in the painting and the mi x of warm and cool colors and shapes.  It is exciting to look at.

Country Store by Bill James

Award of Excellence - $500
Emo Architecture

Russell Yerkes review: The excellent work of the building exterior takes you right into the window.  You wonder what they are working on.  Again we see a large amount of neutrals around a spot of color;  the red of the pillow and the hat draw the viewer in.  I like the perspective.

Color a Lionfish with Sarah by Janet-Mach Dutton

Award of Excellence - $500
M. Graham Paints

Russell Yerkes review: She really captured the feeling of crayons.  This is a fun painting with fun shapes.  I like the way that she brought crayons into the fish.  There are many warm and cool colors with fine complements. Very Exuberant!

Soothsayer by Diane Schmidt

Award of Excellence - $500
Periodontal Associates of North Florida

Russell Yerkes review: I love the rich colors in this painting and the abstract shapes which can mislead you.  Notice the abstract shape going up over her head – which could be construed as another arm.  This painting has different levels of depth:  a painting with mood

Boats on the Beach - Chios by Steve Rogers

Award of Merit - $250
Transou Family

Russell Yerkes review: Colors just burst on the painting surface in Steve’s work.  The white spots create fast movement and excitement and you know the boats are rocking in their mooring

Aviatricks: Amelia by Miles Batt

Award of Merit - $250
Lithohaus Printers

Russell Yerkes review: This painting is a combination of whimsy and reality.  The aviatricks candy bar could be a Mars bar or a Baby Ruth.  There is a very nice use of negative space and positive space.  Your eye travels around the painting so well and the figure looks like it is flying.

Go Dot by Brenda Turner

Award of Merit - $250
Dr. Andrew Wong and Bobby Warren of the Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic

Russell Yerkes review: Brenda could be referring to “Waiting for Godot.  And this painting looks like the figure is not only waiting but also ready to leap if necessary.  This is a very exciting painting.  The paint is so directly applied and the use of color, shapes and light is outstanding.  This is a fun painting.
